Getting Started With Stop Motion Animation – What You Need

Here’s a list of everything you need to start animating!

  1. LEGO
  2. Lights
  3. Camera
  4. Computer
  5. Animation Software
  6. Video Editor



You’ll need something to animate!

2. Lights

2 or 3 desk lamps will work just fine.

I recommend using Cree LED lightbulbs because they run cool and use less power. Buy at your local hardware store or at


Tape a piece of paper to diffuse the light. You can also tape a colored gel over the light to change the color to get the look you want. (Just make sure the paper isn’t too close to the light!)

3. Camera

I recommend starting out with a webcam. I’ve made many great films with the c920! In the future you can always upgrade to a DSLR if you really need the extra quality.

4. Computer

If you’re current computer isn’t fast enough. These are my recommended specs for a new computer.

Recommended specs:

  • Intel i3, i5, i7 CPU at 1.33+ GHz
  • 4GB+ RAM
  • 512MB VRAM
  • 120+GB Hard drive/SSD


5. Animation Software

PC – HeliumFrog Animator [FREE]

Mac – iStopMotion [$50]

Mac – Dragonframe [$295]

iPhone/iPad/iPod touch – iStopMotion [$9.99]

6. Video Editing Software

Windows has Movie Maker built in for free and Mac has iMovie (also free). Here are some free optoins: But if you’re looking for something a bit better, then here’s a list comparing your options:,2817,2397215,00.asp If you have the money to spend on professional options, then I recommend Sony Vegas Pro or Premiere Pro (What I use).
